Decoupage - decorating wooden surfaces with images. This is a special technology of implanting drawings, photographs into the plane of the product, which does not require special devices, based on manual labor.
Benefits
Advantages:
- Decorating products with cut out paper pictures, fabric patterns, photographs gives a second life to old objects.
- The varnish coating provides the wood with a protective layer.
- Decoupage compositions adorn the interior.
- The technique of implanting images into the structure of wood does not require special skills.
- The ability to receive any stories on paper using computer technology.
- The decoupage process is cheap.
Workplace
It is necessary to organize the workplace correctly. A kitchen or desk is well suited. It is necessary to take care of the proper lighting.
Preparation of materials
Required:
- harvesting;
- coating agents;
- decoupage materials.
Billet
A piece of board of small thickness is suitable. If the product needs to be hung on a wall, a thin section is used. If the workpiece is a piece of furniture (back of the chair, wall of the chest of drawers, casket, etc.) or a separate item, the thickness does not matter.
The wooden plane should be with a minimum number of cracks and knots. Cracks putty. The remaining knots are used as plot details.
The board should be flat. The surface of the tree is shaved with a planer, cleaned with an emery cloth. A block with a double-sided clip for sandpaper is suitable (such a tool is used for grouting putty).
You can process the board with a surface gage. The width of the opening of a small machine is 330 mm.
Coating products
The wood is coated with two types of compounds: acrylic paint, water-based varnish. Choose a tool that suits the style of the product.
Water polish
This is a homogeneous dispersion of emulsifiers and water dust.. Apply by brush. After evaporation of water, a strong transparent film forms. If the wood is valuable, the varnish layer emphasizes the structure. The composition is used to create decoupage on a natural background saw cut.
Acrylic paints
When you need to hide the appearance of the board, the wood is covered with acrylic paint. In addition to the main function, it serves as a primer. This is a water-dispersion composition. Pigment particles are in suspension in the aquatic environment.
After applying the emulsion to the wood, the water evaporates. An elastic color film remains. It resists mechanical stress, ultraviolet.
PVA
PVA glue is similar in its characteristics to acrylic paints and varnishes. The aqueous solution creates a strong film of a milky tint.
Decoupage Materials
Materials for images on a tree - color or black and white drawing, pattern on paper, fabric basis, photography.
Paper or napkins
In stores you can buy decoupage kits with images of various subjects on thin paper.
Often used napkins, on top of which are printed. Products consist of one front part with a pattern and two layers of clean paper. To work, the bottom two sheets are carefully removed.
The cloth
For decoration, various applications from fabric are used. The material is selected thin. It can be silk, cambric and more. Fabric and foil are suitable for creating original motifs.
Photos
Color and black-and-white shots accentuate image details against the background of a woody field.
Decoupage for beginners

- After several trial works, you need to choose the most successful option. Following him, proceed with the execution of the main plan. Preliminary training will help to avoid flaws in work.
Decoupage workshop on a wooden box
Boxes with straight edges are a good foundation. Stages:
- surface preparation;
- primer;
- selection and application of the image;
- decoration processing;
- topcoat.
Surface preparation
The wooden surface of the box can be varnished and painted. They must be removed: over time, the varnish may crack, accumulate dust, this will significantly reduce the adhesion of the treated surface.
The box is first smoothed with rough sandpaper. Then the tree is brought to smoothness with a “zero” skin.
Primer
As the soil, waterborne varnish or acrylic paint is used. With a soft brush, a thin layer is primed to the desired plane of the casket.
Selection and application of the image
Fragments are selected on the separated part of the napkin, cut out with scissors. The front part of the picture is impregnated with PVA glue. Fragment face down smoothed to the casket.
Decor Processing
After the glue dries, the drawings are treated with a sponge soaked in water. Wet paper is rolled up with fingertips until the desired image is clearly displayed. The main thing is not to overdo it, not to damage the picture. This operation can be carried out using a damp sponge wrapped in two layers of gauze.
When the surface of the casket is dry, a thin brush with acrylic paint outlines the contours of patterns and decoupage figures. Drawings look good, fragments of which are highlighted by gilding.
Finish coat
The surface is coated with two to three layers of varnish. Achieve full smoothing of the thickness of the decor on the tree. The result is a product with a strong protective coating.
Decoupage workshop on a wooden board
Step-by-step instruction:
- They select a photo, scan it, create a file on the computer desktop.
- The photo is glued to the tree with the front side, so the image is mirrored.
- Print a snapshot.
- Cut off all the excess with scissors.
You cannot use ordinary photo paper. She is tough, it is difficult to erase her back paper structure. Even if it works out, the picture will be cloudy.
- If the board has an old coating (paint or varnish), it is prepared (see. Procurement).
- The tree is coated with waterborne varnish or acrylic paint. Paint is selected so that a contrast is created between the image and the general background of the board. So, a bright bouquet will look good in a dark field, and a dark image - in a light.
- All other actions are performed in the same order as in the version with napkins.
Two-step craquelure
The tool for creating patina on a varnished or painted decoupage surface is called craquelure. It can be purchased at the art salon or specialized departments of building supermarkets.
Craquelure consists of two drugs of the first and second step. First, decoupage on a tree is treated with the first composition. Then cover with a liquid of the second step.
Patina Technology
Patina - cracking of a painted or lacquered surface in the form of a large or fine mesh. To give the effect of antiquity:
- With a soft brush, evenly distribute the first craquelure.
- Dry the surface to a state of weak stickiness. This is determined tactilely - by touching the fingertips. Drying usually takes 2-3 hours.
- Brush the second layer with tool No. 2.
- Dry decoupage indoors at room temperature.
- Rubbed pastel, eye shadow or pigment powder into a dry surface. It shows patina, creates the effect of antiquity.
- The board is washed under running water.
- The tree is dried, covered with a top coat of water or alkyd varnish.
